Five Songs that Get Me in My Zone

Everyone has music that helps them get into their zone, whether it’s before a workout, an outing, or clocking into work. I have several playlists specifically for whenever I begin my morning commute. I normally pick up an iced Chai latte or iced Americano from Dunkin or Starbucks (depending on my temperament). The music I choose for my commute has always been a major part of my routine. Driving on any interstate in Nashville is incredibly nerve-wracking, and I-24 is the greatest monster of them all.

It takes some serious guts to get onto the interstate every morning and take full control of the road. These are five songs that always either amp me up for the task or calm me down on the drive home.

Runnin’ - 21 Savage, Metro Boomin

The song is probably my all-time favourite when coming into work. It’s fast-paced, the lyrics are crazy, and it gives me the drive that I need to get started on the day. Work has its own ups and downs, but whenever I enter the building, I’m able to get into my “get it done, with excellence” mindset easily. I love what I do and it helps that I’m good at what I do. I first heard this song whenever I was in training for my current job. I immediately loved it and this song became one of my top songs from that point forward. I’m not a die-hard 21 Savage fan like my coworkers think- I don’t know anything about 21 Savage, but he makes excellent rap music.

Walk Em Down (Don’t Kill Civilians) - Metro Boomin, 21 Savage, Mustafa

When it comes to requesting any song at work, this song is always my #1 pick. The balance between the first half of the song and the second half are absolutely marvelous. I remember when this song first came out, I was expressing how much I loved this song with Honorable C.N.O.T.E. I described the second half of the song as a “hood ballad”. From the contrast between the two halves of the song; the way the two scenarios mirror each other is difficult to put into words. Say what you want about rap and trap music, but this song was beautifully written, engineered, and produced. I have done my own rendition of ‘Don’t Kill Civilians’, but I haven’t decided if I should upload it anywhere or not. Regardless, this is currently my all-time favourite song that helps me get into the zone, and I think you would love it as well.

Give It To Ya - Marzville

Everyone knows that I love my Soca music! I have so many playlists it’s very hard to keep track of my favourite ones. This song is one that I discovered a few months ago when I was driving back from Cincinnati, Ohio. I turned on like a shuffle/discover when it came to the end of one of my playlists and this was one of the songs that came on. I immediately fell in love with this song because it was truly a soulful Caribbean sing-along. I’ve listened to some other songs by Marzville, but this has to be my favourite to sing along to. I normally play this song whenever I’m either driving home from work or running errands on the weekends. I already added this song to one of my playlists, but sometimes I just play it on its own!

Givin’ Up (Not The One) - Don Toliver, 21 Savage, 2 Chainz

Another Honorable C.Note song, surprise! I fell in love with this song whenever I went to see ‘Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse’ about a month ago. I personally was not very much a fan of the movie itself, but what kept my attention was the music, along with the artists and producers who created the music for the movie. I did get this entire album and I listen to it from time to time, but this song specifically is on my playlist for whenever I drive home from work. After a long day of dealing with angry customers, this song really relaxes me and sparks my imagination. It’s a very inspiring song and I highly recommend as it is one of my top five.

Aye Yo - Sekon Sta

Another one of my favourites! This is one of my favourite songs to sing and dance to. I normally play this whenever I’m running around doing errands. I get very tense and anxious in public and this is one of those songs that really bring me back. The imagery in the song cover is also beautiful, this is another thing that made me fall in love with the song. I’m always in the mood for soca music and this is one of the first songs on my playlist. This song is very fun and I think everyone should give it one listen to fall in love. I discovered this song on my drive back to Nashville from Ohio as well. Once I added it to my playlist, I knew it was going to be in my top five songs!
